CATCH AND RELEASE
This past year has been a year of many changes, some of them very sad. My agent and dear friend Nan Miller lost her beautiful daughter Sara to a sudden and unexplained death on November 30, 2011. I dedicate the Spring 2012 collection to you Sara.
Sara was an avid fisherwoman and lover of nature. She touched the lives of many, both family and friends. She had a 13year career as a clothing rep in Western Canada and went back to school in 2010 to follow her dream receiving an honorary degree in Fish and Wildlife Management from BCIT upon her passing.
“Catch and Release” is a philosophical fishing term. You prepare for the catch, tie the fly, and read the river but when that perfect fish is finally caught it is not kept for long. It is released back into the waters, back into the cycle of nature. The experience is not about loss or death but about participating in the wonderful game of life.
This inspired me to create a sterling silver fish with “Catch and Release” stamped on the back. A portion of the proceeds of this piece will be going to an organization Sara implemented with a group of fellow students from the Wildlife Management Program to clean up the Frazer River and protect the Sturgeon fish in their natural habitat.
This past year has also been a time of connecting with women who shared their stories of overcoming illness, difficult relationships, and the loss of loved ones. I felt a common thread woven between each woman’s story - their incredible determination to overcome obstacles and their ability to never stop loving with heart and soul. I fashioned a heart pendant with a small lion in the centre as a testimony to women’s courage. The lion is a symbol of strength and loyalty. May it act as a reminder to cherish each moment spent with those important to us because our time together may not be long.
Catch and release………..
with love
Karyn
